The fog clung to the cliffs like a living shroud, thick and salt-laced, curling through the broken stones of Blackthorn Manor as if the sea itself sought to reclaim the place. Eleanor Voss stood at the tall arched window of the western library, twenty-eight years of scholarly hunger etched into the faint lines around her eyes, her dark hair pinned loosely at her nape. The inheritance papers still lay scattered across the mahogany desk behind her—deed, bloodline, the crumbling Gothic pile perched above the churning water. She had come for the books. Only the books. Shelves rose three stories into shadowed vaults, packed with grimoires bound in cracked leather, folios of alchemical sigils, and treatises on the restless dead that no university would have dared catalog.

Candlelight trembled across gilt titles as dusk bled violet through the stained glass. Eleanor’s fingertips traced a spine stamped with a faded blackthorn crest. She had spent three nights already among these forbidden volumes, translating marginalia that spoke of bargains and bindings, of a lord who refused the grave. Her pulse had quickened then, a private thrill she refused to name. Now the air grew colder, the way it always did when the sun died behind the fog bank.

He came as he had the evenings before: first a thickening of shadow near the hearth, then the tall silhouette resolving into Lord Damien Blackthorn. Nineteenth-century coat still elegant despite the centuries, high collar framing a face of pale marble severity, mouth curved with the patience of the undead. Crimson eyes caught the candle flame and held it. He did not speak at once. He never did. He simply watched her, the way a man watches a flame he intends to cup in his bare hands.

Eleanor’s breath fogged the glass. She turned fully, spine straight, chin lifted in defiance that fooled neither of them. “You’re early.”

“Dusk is mine,” he answered, voice low and velvet-soft, the accent of another age lingering like wine. “As this house is mine. As you are beginning to feel you might be.” He drifted closer without quite touching the floorboards, spectral still, the edges of him blurring into the gloom. “I taste the wanting on you, little scholar. It spices the air.”

Heat licked low in her belly even as gooseflesh rose along her arms. She had catalogued worse dangers in these pages—summonings, blood rites—yet nothing prepared her for the slow, deliberate circle he traced around her. Icy presence brushed the nape of her neck though no fingers yet made contact. “I came for knowledge,” she said, steadying her voice. “Not to be claimed by a ghost.”

“Vampire,” he corrected gently, almost fond. “Bound, yes. Ghost, never. And knowledge is precisely what I offer.” His whisper slid against her ear, intimate as a lover’s confession. “Eternal pleasure. The kind that unmakes and remakes. Every dusk, if you invite it. Your pulse races already—do you hear it? It calls to me louder than any grimoire.”

She should have stepped away. Instead Eleanor’s thighs pressed together beneath her heavy skirts, the ache sharp and sudden. Dread and desire braided tight; she had always loved the dark edges of things. “You cannot touch me like this.”

“Not yet.” A smile ghosted across his mouth. “Invitation is the oldest key. Speak it, Eleanor Voss, and I will show you how thoroughly a body can be claimed.”

That first dusk he vanished with the last of the light, leaving her flushed and furious with herself. The next evening she left the windows unlatched. The evening after, she wore her hair down. By the fourth dusk the flirtation had shed its gloves.
