The house still pulsed with the ghost of the party—empty Solo cups scattered across the kitchen island, a half-deflated balloon sagging against the ceiling fan, the sticky-sweet smell of spilled beer and perfume hanging in the warm air. Lila stood barefoot in the middle of the living room in her tiny black shorts and a white crop top that clung to her sweat-damp skin, gathering plastic plates while the bass from the last playlist still thumped faintly through the walls from a forgotten speaker. At twenty-two she had the lean, inked arms of a working tattoo artist, pale skin mapped with fine-line florals and geometric bands that disappeared under the hem of her top. Her best friend’s older brother Marcus moved through the wreckage like he owned every inch of it—twenty-eight, six-foot-four of hard Black muscle, shoulders stretching the faded gray sweatshirt he had thrown on after most of the guests left. The reputation that followed him was half legend, half warning: the quiet ones who never started shit but finished it permanently.

She bent to snag a cup near the couch and felt his eyes on the curve of her ass. When she straightened he was already closer, dumping a trash bag into the bin with a low chuckle that rolled through her chest.

“You don’t have to stay, Lila. I got this.”

“And leave you drowning in red cups? Please. Your sister would murder me.” She tossed another handful in, hip brushing his thigh as she passed. The contact lingered a second too long. “Besides… it’s quieter now. Nice.”

Marcus’s dark gaze tracked her. He had that easy, dangerous calm that made girls stupid at the bar and men step aside on the street. Tonight the calm felt charged. He grabbed two water bottles from the fridge, cracked one, and handed her the other. Their fingers touched. Neither pulled away.

“Quieter,” he repeated, voice like gravel wrapped in velvet. “You been quiet all night too. Usually you’re loud—laughing, dragging half the party into some drinking game. What’s up?”

Lila leaned against the counter, bottle cool against her palm, and let herself look at him the way she had only dared in secret for years. The thick neck, the faint scar along his jaw, the way his sweats hung low on narrow hips. Heat uncoiled low in her belly.

“Maybe I was waiting for everyone else to leave.”

The words hung there. Marcus set his bottle down slowly. A muscle flexed in his forearm.

“Yeah?” He stepped in until the heat of him pressed against her front. “Waiting for what, exactly?”
