I stayed after the last of the intermediate group had packed up their chalk bags and drifted out into the parking lot, the gym lights humming lower the way they always did once the evening rush thinned. My fingers still smelled like magnesium and the cheap rubber of the holds. Twenty-eight years old and I still got that low flutter in my stomach every time Grant walked the mats during advanced technique—thirty-two, calm hands, that quiet way he corrected a foot placement without ever raising his voice. For weeks the banter had been thickening: him asking if I wanted the tighter figure-eight demo “just for fun,” me holding his gaze half a second too long while he coiled the dynamic line. We both knew. I just finally let myself ask.
“Grant?” My voice came out smaller than I meant in the empty main cave. He was racking biners near the auto-belays, black tee stretched across his shoulders, the faint rope burns on his forearms catching the light. “Could you… walk me through proper chest-harness tie-in? The advanced one. I keep second-guessing the knot when I’m pumped.”
He turned fully, one eyebrow lifting like he’d been waiting. The corner of his mouth moved—not quite a smile. “Now? Place is closed in twenty.”
“I know.” I stepped closer, climbing shoes still on, chalk dusting the insides of my thighs where my shorts rode up. “I want it right. From you.”
Something in his eyes darkened, warm and deliberate. He nodded once toward the training wall where the fixed ropes hung. “Shoes off. Stand here.”
I peeled them free, socks following, bare feet cool on the rubber mat. Grant pulled a hank of jute from his personal kit—not the gym’s smooth nylon, but rough, natural fiber that rasped when he shook it out. My pulse jumped. He stepped into my space until I smelled chalk and clean sweat and the faint cedar of whatever soap he used.
