The college darkroom smelled of chemicals and forgotten ambitions, a narrow rectangle of absolute black after Mia flipped the main switch and left only the faint, useless glow of the safe-light covered by a cloth. Nineteen-year-old photography majors, best friends since freshman orientation, they had stayed long past closing to finish developing the last rolls from their joint midterm project. No one else wandered the art building at this hour. The heavy door sealed them in with a soft pneumatic sigh.
Mia’s voice came first, low and amused. “Can you even find the trays?”
Ethan’s answer drifted from somewhere to her left. “I’m following the edge of the counter like always. You always put the developer on the left.”
Their hands brushed while reaching for the same plastic tray. The contact was brief, accidental, yet it sent a spark straight up Mia’s arm. She laughed softly to cover the sudden tightness in her chest. In the pure dark every sound sharpened: the drip of water from the faucet they had left running at a trickle, the rustle of her oversized sweater, the soft scuff of Ethan’s sneakers.
They worked in practiced silence for a few minutes, guiding film into the chemicals by touch alone. Mia’s fingers kept grazing his. Each time the air between them thickened. She had known for months that Ethan was still a virgin; he had confessed it one drunk night on the dorm roof, voice cracking with embarrassment. She had admitted the same about herself, laughing it off as if it were nothing. It had not been nothing. The knowledge sat between them like undeveloped film, waiting for the right moment to reveal its image.
“Remember what you told me last month?” she whispered now, so close that her breath stirred the hair near his ear. “About never having… you know.”
Ethan went still. She heard him swallow. “Yeah. You too.”
“I’ve thought about it,” Mia said, the words tumbling out before she could stop them. “About you. In the dark like this. Just… touching. Seeing what it would feel like without anyone watching.”
His reply came rough. “Fuck, Mia. Me too. Every time we’re in here I get hard just from your voice. I’ve jerked off thinking about your hands guiding mine onto the paper, only then they slide lower.”
The confession hung heavy. Another brush of fingers, longer this time. Neither pulled away.
