Diner After Midnight: Her Son's Best Friend

The rain hammered the tin roof of Nadia’s roadside diner like a thousand restless fists. Neon from the OPEN sign flickered against the wet asphalt, painting the empty lot in sickly pink. Forty-two, divorced three years, hips still thick from the son she had raised alone, Nadia wiped down the last booth with slow, deliberate strokes.
