The late afternoon sun hung low over the marina, painting the water in molten gold as Warrick stepped onto the deck of the rented luxury houseboat, duffel bag slung over one broad shoulder. At twenty-eight, the personal trainer’s body was a study in hard-earned power—thick chest, carved abs, powerful thighs that strained the fabric of his shorts. His best friend and roommate Gideon followed close behind, leaner, inked from collarbone to hip with swirling black designs that shifted whenever he moved. Gideon’s dark hair was still damp from the quick shower he’d taken after their morning clients, and the scent of his cedar soap mixed with the lake breeze.
They had planned this double date for weeks. Two women—Marisol and Imani—were supposed to meet them here for a weekend of sun, drinks, and whatever else might develop. Warrick had suggested it half as a joke, half as a desperate attempt to force the simmering tension between him and Gideon out into the open under the safe cover of “dates.” Both men had known they were gay for years, had even joked about it over beers, but the mutual hunger had stayed locked behind twin locked doors of roommate etiquette and fear of ruining the best friendship either of them had ever had.
Gideon’s phone buzzed first. He glanced at the screen, then snorted. “Imani just bailed. Something about a family emergency.” Warrick’s own phone lit up a second later. Marisol’s message was shorter, colder: Can’t make it. Sorry. Silence stretched. The houseboat rocked gently against its moorings. Warrick dropped his bag and ran a hand over the short fade of his hair. “Well. Fuck.” Gideon’s mouth curved, slow and dangerous. “Looks like it’s just us and a fully stocked bar for the next forty-eight hours.”
They moved through the sleek interior—leather couches, a kitchen island gleaming under recessed lights, two queen cabins they no longer needed—then back out onto the upper deck. Warrick cracked open a pair of cold craft beers while Gideon fired up the Bluetooth speakers with something low and bass-heavy. The sun was still fierce enough that both men peeled off their shirts without discussion. Warrick’s torso was all dense muscle and faint trails of dark hair; Gideon’s was tighter, ropes of lean muscle flexing under the dense blackwork of his tattoos—vines, geometric patterns, a stylized raven mid-flight across one shoulder blade.
They settled into the padded lounge chairs, legs stretched out, bottles sweating in their fists. The unspoken thing between them thickened like the humidity. Warrick kept catching himself staring at the way sweat beaded along the cut of Gideon’s hipbones, the way the ink seemed to drink the light. Gideon’s gaze, when it flicked over, was just as hungry, lingering on the heavy bulge already starting to press against Warrick’s shorts.
“You’re staring, Trainer,” Gideon said, voice rough with amusement and something hotter. He took a long pull of beer, throat working. “Been doing that a lot lately.” Warrick’s laugh came out low. “You’re one to talk. I’ve caught you watching me change after the gym more times than I can count.” “Maybe I like the view.” Gideon’s free hand traced idle circles on his own stomach, fingertips following the trail of hair that disappeared into his waistband. “Maybe I’ve liked it for a long fucking time.”
The admission hung between them, charged. Warrick sat up straighter, beer forgotten. Sunlight glinted off the sweat rolling down the deep valley of his pecs. “How long?” Gideon’s eyes—dark, almost black in this light—locked on his. “Since the night you moved in. You walked out of the shower in nothing but a towel and I nearly swallowed my tongue. Every morning run, every sparring session, every time you clap me on the back and leave your hand there a second too long… I’ve been hard for you for months, Warrick. Years, if I’m honest.”
