Exes Find Each Other Again

Rosa stood at the edge of the reception tent in her deep emerald dress, the fabric clinging to her curves as lantern light caught the freckles across her shoulders. At twenty-two she still carried the same restless energy she had in high school, only now it hummed hotter beneath her skin. She had come alone, freshly single, expecting nothing more than free champagne and polite small talk. Then Marco stepped through the open flaps in a charcoal suit that fit him like a second skin, dark hair slightly tousled, and every careful wall she had built cracked open.

Their eyes locked across the dance floor. He froze mid-step, drink forgotten in his hand. The years fell away—late-night texts that never quite said what they meant, stolen kisses behind the bleachers that stopped at heavy petting, the mutual cowardice that let them drift apart after graduation. Marco crossed the grass without looking away. “Rosa,” he said, voice rough. “You look… fuck. You look like every night I couldn’t sleep.”

She laughed, low and shaky, heat flooding her cheeks. “You’re one to talk. That suit should be illegal.” They stood too close, the scent of his cologne mixing with the lake breeze. Flirting came easy, open and electric; fingers brushed when they both reached for the same champagne flute, thighs pressed together on a shared bench while the speeches droned. “I never stopped thinking about you,” Rosa admitted, staring at his mouth. “All the almosts.”

Marco’s hand found the small of her back. “Same. Every damn time I tried with someone else, it was your face I saw. Never went further than you and I did. Still haven’t.” The confession hung between them, raw. By the time the first slow song played they were already inventing excuses to slip away.
