The wind screamed against the boarded windows of the remote mountain cabin like it wanted inside and meant to freeze everything solid. Jake hunkered deeper into his flannel, breath fogging in the sudden dark after the generator coughed its last. The weekend reunion had emptied out hours ago—cars crunching down the mountain road before the blizzard sealed the pass. Only he and Lena remained, two exes stranded with a dying fire and the knowledge that the main rooms would turn to ice by midnight.
“Storage room’s the only spot that holds heat,” Jake muttered, hauling the single thick sleeping bag off the shelf. The space was barely bigger than a walk-in closet: stacked boxes of canned goods, a bare concrete floor, one flickering battery lantern casting hard shadows. Lena stood in the doorway, arms crossed under her full breasts, red hair wild from the wind that had followed her in. At twenty-nine she still looked like trouble poured into tight jeans, the same fiery bartender who’d once slammed drinks and then slammed him against the alley wall behind her bar.
“You’re kidding. One bag. With you.” Her voice carried that familiar edge, the one that used to precede either a fight or the best sex of his life.
“Unless you prefer turning into a popsicle out there.” He dropped the bag and kicked it open. “We zip it, we share body heat, we survive till morning. Simple.”
