The ferry cut through the fog like a slow, deliberate blade, its deck lights smeared into pale haloes that barely touched the black water. Hana stood just inside the glass doors a moment longer than she needed to, watching her stepfather’s broad back at the rail. Dante had been her mother’s husband for six years—long enough that the house had settled around the three of them like a shared skin—but tonight the open bar at the wedding and the slow grind of a late dance had left something raw between them. She was twenty-two, flushed with wine and the cold salt air, and every time she looked at the man who had walked her through high-school recitals and college move-ins she felt the same low, forbidden pull that had lived under the floorboards of their quiet evenings alone.
She pushed the door open. The wind slapped her thin sundress against her thighs and the hard points of her nipples. Dante didn’t turn at first. He kept his hands on the cold metal, staring at the distant harbor glow as if the water might offer absolution.
“You’re going to freeze out here,” he said without looking, voice rough from champagne and something thicker.
“So are you.” Hana stepped up beside him, close enough that the heat of his body cut the chill. The sundress was barely decent—pale fabric that clung when the mist kissed it—and she knew he could see the outline of her bare breasts, the dark shadow between her legs. “Mom’s already half-asleep in the lounge with Aunt Ingrid. Nobody’s coming out.”
