The thunder had been building for hours, a low growl rolling across the black water of the lake like something alive and hungry. Elena stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows of the villa’s great room, bare feet cold on the marble, watching lightning stitch silver veins through the sky. Her husband’s private lakeside retreat sat twenty miles from the nearest neighbor, all glass and dark wood and carefully curated isolation. Richard had been gone four days on another endless business trip to Singapore, leaving her with nothing but the echo of his distracted goodbyes and the quiet presence of the man he paid to feed her.
Marcus.
She had felt his eyes on her all week. The tall, broad-shouldered chef moved through the kitchen like he owned it, sleeves rolled to the elbow, forearms corded with the kind of muscle that came from real work rather than a gym. Thirty-two, former line cook who’d clawed his way up, cocky half-smile permanently etched at the corner of his mouth. Every morning he plated her breakfast with that same knowing look, as if he could taste the frustration rolling off her skin. Twenty-eight years old and already half-forgotten, Elena thought bitterly. Richard’s beautiful, expensive wife left to rattle around this glass cage while he chased deals.
The storm broke open with a crack that shook the windows. Rain hammered the deck in thick silver sheets. Heat crawled under Elena’s skin, restless and mean. She needed the cold. Needed something to shock the ache out of her bones. She stripped right there in the dark living room—silk robe, lace panties, everything—leaving the garments in a careless pile. Naked, nipples already tightening in the chill air seeping through the glass, she slid the door open and stepped into the downpour.
Rain sluiced over her breasts, down the soft curve of her stomach, between her thighs. The wooden path to the lake was slick; she nearly lost her footing twice before the cold water swallowed her calves, then her hips. She dove. The lake closed over her head like a fist, shocking, perfect. When she surfaced she floated on her back, hair fanning out, rain peppering her face and bare breasts. Lightning flashed white across the sky and for a moment she felt free—until the hard white beam of a flashlight cut across the water and pinned her.
“Elena?”
Marcus’s voice, rough with sleep and rain. He stood on the dock in nothing but low-slung sweatpants, flashlight in one hand, the other shielding his eyes from the downpour. Water streamed down the hard planes of his chest, caught in the dark trail of hair that disappeared beneath his waistband. Even at this distance she saw the way his gaze locked on her, the way his throat worked when another flash of lightning painted her naked body in stark relief.
