Jake’s truck rumbled to a stop in the gravel driveway just after sunset. The lake house was dark except for the single porch light Mike had left on for him. He killed the engine, grabbed his duffel, and let himself in with the key hidden under the ceramic frog by the door. The place smelled like pine, sunscreen, and old wood—just the way he remembered it from a dozen summers spent here with Mike.
He was looking forward to three quiet days of fishing, beer, and not thinking about the transmission shop. Mike was in Chicago for his cousin’s wedding and wouldn’t be back until Monday. Jake had the whole house to himself.
Or so he thought.
He’d just cracked his first beer and stepped onto the back deck when he heard the sliding door behind him. Bare feet padded across the cedar planks. A soft, amused voice cut through the dusk.
“Well, well. If it isn’t Jake the Snake.”
He turned and nearly dropped the bottle.
Riley stood in the doorway wearing nothing but a faded gray tank top that barely reached the tops of her thighs and a pair of tiny black shorts that clung to her like they’d been painted on. Her dark hair was twisted up in a messy knot, a few loose strands framing her face. At nineteen she was all smooth golden skin, long legs, and attitude. The last time he’d seen her she’d been a gangly sixteen-year-old with braces. That girl was gone. This one looked like she knew exactly what she was doing to him.
“Riley,” he said, voice rougher than he wanted. “Mike didn’t say you’d be here.”
She smirked, stepping closer. The tank top shifted and he caught the faint outline of her nipples through the thin fabric. “Mike doesn’t know everything. I finished finals early. Decided to come up and… unwind.” Her gaze dragged slowly down his chest, over the grease-stained T-shirt he hadn’t bothered changing out of, then lower. “Didn’t expect to find you here playing house-sitter.”
Jake took a long pull from his beer, trying to ignore the sudden heat pooling low in his gut. “I’m just crashing. I’ll stay out of your way.”
Her laugh was low and throaty. “That’s cute. You think you can ignore me all weekend, Jake?” She turned and walked back inside, hips rolling with every step. The tiny shorts rode up, revealing the soft undercurve of her ass. “Good luck with that.”
