The cabin sat nestled among the pines like something out of a postcard, all rough-hewn logs and wide windows that caught the late afternoon sun. Mark carried the last of the bags inside while Lisa kicked off her sandals and spun in a slow circle in the middle of the living room, bare feet on the polished wood floor. She was twenty-eight, same as him, all long legs and that easy smile that still made his stomach flip after six years of marriage. Jake lounged against the kitchen island, thirty and built like he spent every free hour in a gym that actually liked him, dark hair damp from the drive, a six-pack of craft beer dangling from one hand.
“Tara bailed,” Jake said, popping the top off a bottle and handing it over. “Some work emergency. Just us three animals for the weekend.”
Lisa’s eyes flicked to him, lingered a second too long on the way his T-shirt stretched across his chest. “Poor you. Stuck with the married couple.”
Mark laughed, but something already prickled under his skin. Jake had always been the magnetic one—charming without trying, the guy who could talk a bartender into free shots and a stranger into his bed by closing time. Mark had never minded before. Tonight felt different. The air was thick with the smell of pine and the distant promise of the private hot tub out back, steam already rising in the cool mountain dusk.
They cooked steaks on the little grill, drank cheap red wine from plastic cups, and by full dark the three of them were padding barefoot down the wooden steps to the deck. The hot tub glowed turquoise, bubbles churning. Lisa peeled off her sundress without ceremony, revealing a black bikini that barely contained the full curves of her breasts and the soft flare of her hips. Mark watched Jake’s gaze track her, open and appreciative. Lisa caught it. She didn’t look away.
Mark stripped to his trunks and eased in first. The water was perfect, almost too hot, soaking into tired muscles. Jake followed, then Lisa, who settled between them with a contented sigh, arms stretched along the rim. Wine glasses clinked. Steam rose in lazy curls.
“God, I needed this,” Lisa murmured, tipping her head back. Water lapped at the undersides of her breasts. “No phones, no deadlines. Just… this.”
Jake’s knee brushed hers under the water. Accidental. Maybe. “You’re glowing already. That bikini’s doing criminal things.”
Lisa laughed, low and throaty, but color rose in her cheeks. Mark felt the first real twist of something—jealousy sharp as a blade, and underneath it a darker pulse he didn’t want to name. He took a long swallow of wine.
Conversation drifted. Old college stories, Jake’s latest conquests (carefully edited), Lisa’s promotion at the design firm. Every few minutes her foot would nudge Jake’s calf, or her shoulder would press closer when she laughed. Mark watched her nipples harden against the wet fabric of her top. He told himself it was the night air.
