I'm Elena, thirty-two, and for the last six years I have run Vesper, the most respected wine bar in Portland. Every night I taste, I decide, I command—staff, guests, even the bottles themselves seem to obey the crisp order of my voice. Control is my oxygen. Which is why, when my flight out of Chicago was delayed six hours and the airline comped me a room at the luxury airport hotel, I told myself I would simply enjoy a quiet glass downstairs and keep my armor intact.
The hotel’s wine bar was intimate, low-lit, all dark wood and leather booths that smelled faintly of polish and aged cabernet. I took a corner stool, ordered a Barolo that cost more than most people’s dinner, and let the first sip roll across my tongue like velvet sin. That was when he sat down two seats away.
Marcus.
Thirty-eight, broad through the shoulders, dressed in a black button-down that looked soft enough to bite. His forearms were roped with muscle and marked with faint white scars I would later learn came from years of working heavy leather in his workshop. He ordered a Nebbiolo without looking at the list, then turned his head and caught me staring.
His eyes were the color of wet slate after rain. They didn’t ask permission to look; they simply took.
“Long layover?” His voice was low, amused, like he already knew the answer.
“Six hours,” I said, surprised at how steady I sounded. “You?”
“Connecting flight to Milan. Leather trade show.” He lifted his glass in a small toast. “I make things. Belts. Harnesses. Restraints that people beg me to use on them.”
The word restraints slid between my thighs like a fingertip. I felt my pulse jump against the stem of my glass.
I should have changed the subject. Instead I heard myself say, “And do they beg prettily?”
Marcus’s smile was slow, dangerous. “The ones who need it most usually do.”
We talked. Glass after glass disappeared. The conversation never pretended to be innocent. He asked what I controlled in my daily life and how exhausting it had become. I admitted—voice trembling only a little—that sometimes I fantasized about someone else holding the leash. He told me, without flourish, that he was an experienced Dominant and that the moment I’d walked in he’d smelled the submissive underneath my tailored black dress and sharp heels.
