I should confess it properly, the way confessions are meant when the wind still tears at the glass and the sea refuses to quiet. I am Eleanor, twenty-eight, keeper of this storm-lashed tower on the desolate northern coast, and for three years the lighthouse has been my only marriage. Nights I climb the iron stairs alone, lantern swinging, oil-slicked brass smelling of salt and old copper. Outside, the gale howls like something unfinished. Inside, there is only the restless ghost of Captain Thorne—handsome, spectral, eighty years dead and still pacing the lantern room as though the ship he lost might yet answer his call.

We began with conversation. He would appear first as a chill along my nape, then as a voice that knew every ledger entry I had ever written. Flickering lantern light turned his outline silver-blue. I told him of the black sea and the men who never came back; he told me of gales older than my grandmother. The longing grew mutual and unbearable. I wanted the weight of hands that no longer breathed. He wanted the heat of a living woman who chose the dark gladly.

On the night of the worst storm, the witching hour found me polishing the great lens when the air thickened. Thorne materialized fully before me—boots planted on the iron floor, coat dripping phantom rain, face carved with the beauty of a man who had died handsome and stayed that way. Solid enough to touch. I reached without fear. My palm met the cold plane of his chest and felt the thrum of something that was not a heart.

“I have watched you eighty years and three of them yours,” he said, voice rough as hemp rope. “Aching. Wanting. You move through this tower like you already belong to the dead.”

I laughed, low, trembling with delicious dread. “I have craved your ghostly hands since the first night you spoke my name. Touch me. I offer myself.”

Fevered flirtation followed—no coyness left. I unlaced my bodice while the wind screamed. He circled me, spectral fingers tracing the freckles on my shoulders, the curve of my waist. Every brush left frost that melted into heat. I pressed closer, deliberate, seductive, letting him feel the living pulse he had starved for. We both shook with the knowledge of what we were about to cross.
