The wind howled like a living thing outside the heavy timber walls, driving snow sideways in blinding sheets. Elena Voss stood at the wide picture window of her mountain cabin, a mug of spiced tea warming her palms, when she saw the flicker of movement on the narrow road below. A figure, hunched against the storm, thumb out in a futile gesture. He looked half-frozen already.
She didn’t hesitate. Grabbing her heavy down coat and a flashlight, Elena plunged into the blizzard. The cold bit at her cheeks and slipped beneath the hem of her thick cream-colored sweater, but the sight of the tall young man shivering on her property stirred something far warmer inside her.
Up close he was even more striking. Early twenties, broad shoulders, dark wet hair plastered to his forehead, and wide, grateful blue eyes. His backpack was crusted with ice.
“You’re going to die out here,” she called over the wind. “Come inside. Now.”
He didn’t argue. “Thank you. God, thank you.”
His name was Ryan. Twenty-two. Hitchhiking his way across the state after his car broke down thirty miles back. The blizzard had come out of nowhere. Elena listened to his story as she steered him into the cabin, peeling off his soaked jacket and boots at the door. Melted snow dripped from his jeans onto her wide-plank floors.
She was intensely aware of how her heavy breasts moved beneath the soft, tight angora sweater as she moved. The fabric clung to her full, braless curves, nipples already tightened from the cold and from the way his gaze kept dropping to them before jerking guiltily away. At forty-two, Elena knew exactly what she looked like: thick auburn hair twisted up in a messy knot, wide hips, strong thighs, and the kind of soft, ripe body that made younger men stupid.
Ryan’s eyes kept drifting. She let them.
“Fire’s already going,” she said, voice low and warm. “Strip out of those wet clothes in the bathroom and wrap yourself in one of the big towels on the rack. I’ll throw your things in the dryer.”
He obeyed. When he emerged five minutes later, Elena’s breath caught. The white towel rode low on his narrow hips, revealing the sharp cuts of his obliques and the faint trail of dark hair that disappeared beneath the terrycloth. His chest was smooth and powerfully built, shoulders wide from what was clearly an athletic past. Water still glistened on his collarbones. He looked like every filthy fantasy she’d ever written, only breathing and real and standing in her living room.
Elena’s pulse throbbed between her legs.
She had been alone up here for three weeks, writing another bestseller about older women who took what they wanted from eager younger men. The words had been flowing, but they were missing something vital. Authenticity. Heat. The real taste of forbidden hunger.
Ryan sat on the wide leather ottoman closest to the roaring stone fireplace, elbows on his knees, trying not to stare at the way her sweater molded to her breasts as she handed him a mug of hot cocoa laced with whiskey.
“You’re Elena Voss, aren’t you?” he asked after a long silence. “I saw the books on the shelf. I’ve… read a couple.”
