The neon sign outside Bloom Ink flickered weakly against the rain-slicked street, casting pink ghosts across the empty shop floor. Lila wiped down her station for the third time, the lemon scent of cleaner doing nothing to cut the ache sitting heavy in her chest. Twenty-four years old and freshly dumped, she had no business being here past midnight, but the alternative—staring at the ceiling of her apartment while her ex’s last texts glowed on her phone—felt worse. The shop was hers after hours, quiet enough to hear the hum of the cooling system and the occasional drip from the leaky faucet in back. She was sketching half-heartedly in her pad when the door chime rang.
He filled the frame like he’d been carved for it. Tall, easily six-four, shoulders stretching the black henley he wore, dark skin gleaming under the overhead lights from the rain. Marcus. He didn’t offer a last name, just stepped inside with a soldier’s economy of motion and shut the door against the wet night. “Emergency cover-up,” he said, voice low and smooth as aged whiskey. “Shoulder. Can you work now?”
Lila’s pulse kicked hard. She nodded, already gesturing him toward the chair. “Shirt off. Let me see what we’re dealing with.”
He peeled the henley up and over his head in one fluid pull. Muscle shifted under tight brown skin—pecs carved deep, abs stacked, a dusting of black hair arrowing down into his jeans. The tattoo on his left deltoid was a jagged, poorly done name in heavy black lettering, half-faded and angry-looking. Lila swallowed. Up close the heat rolling off him smelled like rain and clean sweat and something darker, like smoke. Their eyes met when she stepped between his spread knees to angle the light. Instant, electric. Her pale fingers hovered an inch from his dark skin and the air went thick.
“Bad breakup ink?” she asked, voice rougher than she meant.
“Something like that.” His gaze dropped to her mouth, then climbed back up slow. “You look like you know the feeling.”
