Emma stood on the gravel shoulder of the two-lane highway, thumb out, the late afternoon sun baking the asphalt into shimmering waves. Her backpack sagged against one hip, stuffed with a change of clothes, a half-empty water bottle, and the shattered pieces of a three-year relationship. Jake had dumped her two days ago in their shitty campus apartment, saying he needed space to find himself—space that apparently included the redhead from his economics seminar. At twenty-two, Emma felt raw, scraped hollow, her dark hair knotted in a messy ponytail, cutoffs riding high on her thighs, a thin tank top clinging to the sweat between her breasts. She just needed to move, to put miles between herself and the wreckage.
The van rumbled up slow, a big white panel job with tinted windows and a lived-in look, dust caked along the wheel wells. It eased to a stop twenty feet past her. The passenger door swung open. Behind the wheel sat a man who looked like he’d been carved from road miles and quiet authority. Salt-and-pepper hair, thick and a little wild at the temples, a close-cropped beard flecked with silver, broad shoulders stretching a faded black T-shirt. His eyes were a sharp gray-blue, crow’s feet deepening as he gave her a once-over that wasn’t sleazy, just assessing.
“You heading west?” His voice was low, gravel-rough from years of highway wind and late-night coffee.
Emma hesitated only a second. “Anywhere that’s not here.”
He jerked his chin. “Climb in. Name’s Marcus. I got room and I’m going as far as the coast if the jobs line up.”
She tossed her pack in the footwell and slid onto the worn leather seat. Up close he smelled like leather, diesel, and something clean underneath—soap and skin. Fifty-two, she guessed, maybe a hard fifty-two, the kind of man who’d seen enough not to rush. The age gap hit her like a physical thing: his calm, steady presence against the jittery ache still thrashing inside her. Jake had been twenty-three, all unfinished sentences and selfish hands. Marcus’s thick forearm rested on the wheel, veins standing out, a simple silver watch on his wrist. Instant tension prickled under her skin.
They rolled out. The van’s engine settled into a throaty hum. Marcus drove like he owned the road—no jerky lane changes, just smooth confidence. Emma watched the side of his face, the way his jaw worked when he checked the mirrors.
“Boyfriend trouble?” he asked after a few miles, not looking at her.
She laughed, bitter. “That obvious?”
“You got the look. Fresh dump. Eyes still red around the edges.” He glanced over, mouth quirking. “College boy?”
