The harbor lights scattered like loose diamonds across black water as Sonia stepped onto the gangway of the moored yacht, the hem of her deep-green silk dress catching the breeze. Thirty-two years old and still not ready for the way her pulse jumped when she spotted him near the rail. Everett stood half a head taller than the groomsmen, broad shoulders filling a charcoal tuxedo, the same quiet intensity in his dark eyes that had wrecked her concentration in every high-school classroom they shared. Fourteen years since college pulled them to opposite coasts. Fourteen years of careful messages that never said enough.

Omar’s wedding reception had already softened into laughter and clinking glasses when she reached him. Everett turned, and the years collapsed.

“Sonia.” Her name came out rough, almost reverent. “Christ. Look at you.”

“Look at you,” she answered, smiling too wide, heart hammering. “Your brother’s finally doing it.”

They drifted to the quieter side deck, champagne forgotten in their hands. Conversation started safe—jobs, cities, the ridiculous open bar—then slid into the dangerous territory of almosts. Missed flights. Birthdays neither attended. The night before she left for grad school when he had almost kissed her and she had almost let him.

Fresh filth, nightly
