I never thought I’d see him again in these stacks. Not like this. Not with that same hungry look in his eyes that used to undo me three years ago when we were still together, fucking in every quiet corner of this university library like the reckless exhibitionists we were. I’m twenty-eight now, the senior librarian on the evening shift, and Marcus is thirty, back on campus for some research project that brought him straight into my domain. The dimly lit aisles of the third-floor stacks smelled the same—old paper, dust, and the faint metallic tang of the metal shelves. It was past nine, the library nearly empty, just the occasional shuffle of a student’s shoes somewhere distant. Perfect. Dangerous. Exactly how we both liked it.
I was reshelving a cart of oversized art monographs when I heard his voice. “Still hiding back here where no one looks, Ellie?” Low, familiar, that slight rasp that always made my cunt clench. I turned, and there he was: taller than I remembered, broader in the shoulders under a simple gray button-down, dark jeans, that same crooked smile. His eyes raked over me—my pencil skirt, the blouse with one too many buttons undone because the AC was cranked too high, the way my hair was pinned up messy after a long day. Heat flooded me instantly. My nipples tightened against the thin lace of my bra.
“Marcus.” I kept my voice steady, professional, but my pulse hammered. “Didn’t know you were back.”
“Needed the archives for the project. Saw your name on the staff directory.” He stepped closer, into the narrow aisle between the tall shelves of bound periodicals. The fluorescent lights overhead flickered faintly, casting shadows that made everything feel more private and more exposed at once. “You look good. Better than good. Still wearing those skirts that hitch up when you reach the high shelves?”
I laughed, soft, nervous, already wet. “You always noticed that.” My fingers tightened on the book in my hand. The tension was immediate, thick as the silence around us. We both knew what we were. What we’d done here before—bent over reading tables, knees on the carpet, him burying his face between my thighs while I bit my wrist to stay quiet. The risk of a student or another librarian wandering past had always made us come harder. And standing there now, three years of unfinished business crackling between us, I felt that old urge surge back stronger than ever. I wanted him to see me. I wanted someone—anyone—to almost catch us.
He closed the last foot of space. “I missed this place. Missed you in it.” His voice dropped to a whisper. “Tell me you don’t still get wet thinking about how we used to spread for each other right here. Out in the open.”
My breath caught. “I do. God, Marcus, I do. Every time I walk these aisles I remember your hands on me. How loud you’d make me try not to be.” I set the book down on the cart, turning fully toward him. Our bodies were inches apart now. I could smell his cologne, something woodsy and clean, and underneath it the faint scent of his skin that I used to bury my face in. “You’re not exactly subtle showing up like this. What do you want?”
“You. Same as always.” He reached out, slow, giving me every chance to step back. When I didn’t, his fingers brushed my hip, then slid to the small of my back. “I want to feel how soaked you already are. Want to hear you moan just loud enough that whoever’s in the next aisle might hear. You still get off on that, Ellie? Showing off for me? Risking it?”
