The night air over the city tasted like heat and spilled champagne, thick enough to cling to bare shoulders. Downtown’s skyline glittered beyond the glass railing of the secluded rooftop bar, a private nest of low sofas, string lights, and the distant thump of bass from the street far below. Maya adjusted the thin strap of her black silk slip dress and told herself, for the tenth time, that she was here for a normal double date. Normal. With her boyfriend Jake and his buddy Connor and Connor’s girlfriend Lena—who was currently laughing at something and making Maya’s pulse hammer against her throat like it wanted out.
Lena stood half a step closer than politeness required, the neon signs painting blue and magenta across the intricate ink crawling up her arms. Roses and geometric lines, a dagger through a heart just visible where her cropped tank rode up over low-slung jeans. Free-spirited didn’t begin to cover it. Twenty-eight, same as Maya, but Lena moved like the rules were optional and the night belonged to whoever claimed it first. Her dark hair was piled loosely, a few strands sticking to the damp skin of her neck. Maya caught herself staring at the pulse point there and forced her gaze back to the city.
Jake and Connor had already abandoned them for a corner booth, phones out, voices rising over some game highlight reel. “Did you see that fucking interception—” Jake’s laugh boomed. Connor ordered another round without looking up. The men were gone in every way that mattered, cocooned in stats and beer and the easy bro-code of not noticing much of anything else.
Maya’s fingers tightened on the cool metal of the railing. “They’ll be like that for an hour,” she said, aiming for dry and landing somewhere breathier. “Possibly the rest of the night.”
Lena turned fully toward her. The movement brought the warm scent of her—skin, citrus soap, a faint metallic tang of ink studio—straight into Maya’s lungs. Intense eye contact hit first: Lena’s eyes were dark, almost black in the low light, and they didn’t flicker away. They catalogued. Maya’s sharp cheekbones, the deliberate red of her mouth, the way the silk dress clung to the curve of her breasts when the breeze shifted.
“Good,” Lena said simply. The word was low, almost a hum. “Gives us a chance to actually talk. Or not talk.” A small, crooked smile. “I’ve been waiting to get you alone since that dinner three weeks ago. You remember. You wore that blazer that made you look like you could ruin a man in court and then fuck him stupid in the elevator.”
Heat flooded Maya’s face, then dropped lower, a slow roll between her thighs. She was a corporate lawyer. Precision was her currency. She did not blush at rooftop bars because a tattooed woman with a wicked mouth looked at her like she was already naked. And yet.
“I remember you sketching on a napkin the entire time,” Maya answered, letting her hip rest against the railing so their shoulders nearly brushed. “I kept wondering what you were drawing. Wondered if it was me.”
Lena’s laugh was soft, intimate. She reached out—no hesitation—and traced a single fingertip along the back of Maya’s hand where it gripped the rail. Lingering. The touch was light, but it sparked straight up Maya’s arm and tightened something low in her belly. “It was you. The line of your neck. The way you hold your jaw when you’re pretending you’re not interested.” Her finger circled Maya’s wrist bone, slow. “You’re terrible at pretending, by the way. Your eyes keep dropping to my mouth.”
Maya didn’t pull away. She turned her hand just enough that their fingers slotted loosely together, hidden from the booth by the angle of their bodies. Skin on skin. Lena’s palm was warmer, slightly rough from work, and the contrast made Maya’s silk-smooth lawyer hands feel suddenly oversensitive. “Maybe I like your mouth,” Maya said, voice dropping into the register she usually saved for closing arguments that destroyed opposing counsel. “Maybe I’ve thought about it more than I should. Late at night. After Jake’s asleep.”
Lena’s breath hitched—small, unmistakable. Her thumb stroked once across Maya’s knuckles, then again, firmer. “Tell me.”
The city noise faded. String lights blurred. Maya could feel every place their bodies almost touched: the brush of Lena’s thigh when she shifted closer, the ghost of heat from Lena’s bare midriff. “I think about you on your knees in my office,” Maya murmured, eyes locked on Lena’s. “After hours. Door locked. Me still in my heels, skirt shoved up, and that filthy talented mouth of yours working between my legs until I forget every deposition and every billable hour. I think about tasting you back. Spreading you out on my desk and licking every bit of ink I can reach until you’re shaking.”
Lena’s free hand came up and settled at Maya’s waist, fingers splaying over the slippery fabric, thumb stroking just under the ribcage. Possessive. Hungry. “Fuck, Maya.” The name sounded like a confession. “I’ve been wet since I saw you walk in tonight. That dress should be illegal. I keep imagining sliding the straps down and finding out if your nipples are as tight as they look right now.” Her gaze flicked down, shameless, then back up. “They are. I can see them. Hard little points. For me.”
Maya’s nipples ached, yes—scraping the silk with every breath. She pressed her thighs together under the short hem and felt the slick evidence of how far gone she already was. This wasn’t supposed to happen. She had a boyfriend ten feet away who loved football more than foreplay. Lena had Connor, who was currently shouting at a replay. But the attraction had been a live wire for months: lingering looks across dinner tables, “accidental” brushes in doorways, late-night texts that danced right up to the edge and never crossed. Tonight the edge was gone.
Lena leaned in, lips nearly at Maya’s ear. The hand at her waist slid lower, cupping the curve of her hip, fingertips grazing the upper swell of her ass through the dress. “They’re not watching,” she whispered. “They won’t notice if I do this—” Her mouth brushed the shell of Maya’s ear, then lower, a hot open-mouthed kiss against the side of her throat. Tongue flicking once, tasting salt and perfume. Maya’s knees threatened to buckle. A soft sound escaped her before she could swallow it.
“Lena—”
“Say you want it.” Lena’s teeth grazed, gentle pressure. Her body crowded closer until Maya was pinned lightly between the railing and the warm, inked length of her. Breasts brushed. Lena’s thigh slipped between Maya’s, just enough pressure to make Maya’s clit throb against the seam of her thong. “Say you’ve been craving this as badly as I have. Because I lie awake thinking about eating you out until you come on my tongue and then making you watch me finger myself with your wetness still on my hand. I want to hear that polished lawyer mouth get filthy for me.”
