The overnight train hummed through the black spine of the mountains, its rhythmic sway the only sound besides the low rush of wind against the windows. Inside the compact sleeper car, the lights had been dimmed to a warm amber glow. Emma sat on the lower bunk, knees drawn up, pretending to read the dog-eared paperback she’d brought. She couldn’t focus. Not with him so close.
Marcus lounged on the opposite bunk, one arm draped lazily over the back of the seat, silver threaded through his dark hair like frost on midnight. At fifty-two, the hairdresser carried himself with the easy confidence of a man who had spent decades making women look and feel beautiful. His tailored black shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, revealing a hint of salt-and-pepper chest hair. When he caught her staring again, the corner of his mouth lifted in a knowing half-smile.
“You keep looking at me like that, sweetheart, and I’m going to start thinking you’re not nearly as shy as you pretend,” he said, voice low and smooth, shaped by years of charming clients in his upscale salon.
Emma’s cheeks flushed. She was nineteen, fresh out of her first semester of college, with long chestnut hair that fell in loose waves past her shoulders, wide hazel eyes, and a lithe, athletic body honed by years of dance. She wore a simple white tank top and soft gray lounge shorts that barely reached mid-thigh. The private sleeper had seemed like a luxury when she booked it. Now, sharing the tiny cabin with a man who looked like he’d stepped out of every forbidden fantasy she’d never admitted to having, it felt dangerously intimate.
“I’m not shy,” she replied, lifting her chin. “I’m just… curious. You said earlier you’ve been doing hair for thirty years. That means you must have stories.”
Marcus chuckled, the sound rich and warm. He stretched his long legs, the fabric of his charcoal trousers pulling taut over muscular thighs. “Stories? Plenty. Some of them would make a pretty college girl blush.” His gaze drifted over her slowly, appreciatively. “Especially the ones about the young clients who flirt with me while I’m cutting their hair. Sometimes they want more than a trim.”
Emma’s breath caught. The train rocked gently, pressing her shoulder against the cool window for a moment before easing her back. The motion felt like a hand sliding along her spine. “Do you ever… give them what they want?”
His eyes darkened, pupils widening in the low light. “Only when they ask nicely. And only when they’re old enough to know exactly what they’re asking for.” He leaned forward, elbows on his knees, bringing that experienced, handsome face closer. “You asking, Emma?”
The directness stole the air from her lungs. She could smell his cologne—something woody and expensive—and beneath it, the clean, masculine scent of his skin. Heat pooled low in her belly. She had always been drawn to older men in her private thoughts, the fantasy of steady hands and patient lessons, but she had never dared voice it.
“Maybe I am,” she whispered.
