Snowed-In Rivals: One Bed, Two Wet Tongues

The blizzard had swallowed the mountain whole by the time Lena Voss stomped into the lobby of the Pinecrest Lodge, snow caked thick on her boots and the shoulders of her insulated jacket. Outside, the wind howled like it wanted to peel the roof off. Every flight out of the tiny regional airport was grounded, every shuttle canceled. The desk clerk, a weary woman with frost in her eyebrows, barely looked up when Lena demanded a room.

“Last one,” the clerk said, sliding a key across the scarred wood. “Single. One bed. You’re sharing with the other rider who just came in.”

Lena’s jaw tightened. She already knew. Kira Hale stood by the stone fireplace, peeling off a soaked beanie, dark hair tumbling in damp waves around her sharp cheekbones. Twenty-six, same as Lena, same Olympic circuit, same podiums where they’d glared across the medals and muttered shit that the cameras never quite caught. Lena the powerhouse, all explosive amplitude and blond confidence that bordered on arrogance. Kira the technician, smaller, wiry, wicked with rails and witty enough to needle Lena in every press conference until the sponsors started calling it “good television.”

“You’re fucking kidding me,” Lena said.

Kira’s mouth curved. “Hello to you too, Voss. Looks like the mountain finally got tired of our bullshit and locked us in together.”

The room was up two flights of creaking stairs, barely big enough for the double bed shoved under a slanted ceiling and a bathroom that smelled of pine soap. One window looked out on a white void. Lena dropped her duffel and stared at the mattress. It sagged in the middle like it had given up years ago. Kira kicked the door shut behind them and leaned against it, arms crossed under her still-damp hoodie.
