The wind had been howling for hours by the time Emma realized there was no getting out. Snow piled against the cabin windows in thick, swirling drifts, erasing the narrow mountain road that had brought her here. She stood in the middle of the living room in her damp sweater and jeans, arms wrapped around herself, staring at the white wall of weather outside. Marcus was behind her, stoking the fire he’d built in the massive stone hearth, the flames casting long shadows across the wooden floors and the heavy oak furniture.
She had only come up for the afternoon. Her best friend Jenna had begged off at the last minute—some work emergency—and asked Emma to drop off a spare key and a bag of groceries at her brother’s place. Marcus lived out here half the year, writing and fucking and doing whatever dominant men did when they weren’t in the city. Emma had driven the winding road with the radio loud, trying not to think about him. Trying not to remember the way he’d looked at her across Jenna’s birthday table last year, or the low rumble of his voice when he’d leaned in to murmur something filthy about how pretty she’d look on her knees. She was twenty-two. He was thirty-two. He had always been off-limits in the sharpest, most delicious way.
Then the blizzard hit like a fist. Cell service died. The road vanished. And now they were locked in together until morning at the earliest.
Marcus straightened, brushing ash from his hands. He was tall, broad-shouldered, dark hair a little too long, stubble shadowing a hard jaw. The flannel shirt he wore was open at the throat, sleeves rolled to the elbows, revealing thick forearms corded with muscle and a few faded rope marks that made Emma’s mouth go dry. He looked at her the way he always had—like he already owned the space between her legs.
“You’re stuck, little one,” he said, voice like gravel and smoke. “Roads won’t be passable till dawn. Maybe later.”
Emma swallowed. Heat crawled up her neck. “I… I can take the couch. Or the guest room. I don’t want to impose.”
He smiled, slow and knowing. “You’re not imposing. Sit. I’ll pour wine. We’re going to need it.”
She sat on the edge of the leather sofa while he moved around the open kitchen, uncorking a bottle of something dark and red. The fire cracked and spat. Outside, the storm screamed. Inside, the air felt too thick, charged with every glance they’d ever stolen, every teasing text he’d ever sent when Jenna wasn’t looking, every night Emma had slipped her fingers between her thighs and imagined his hands instead.
He handed her a glass and sat close enough that their thighs almost touched. The wine was rich, warming her from the inside. They talked about nothing at first—the drive, Jenna’s new job, the way the mountains looked before the snow swallowed them. But the silence between sentences grew heavier, stretched tighter, until Emma’s pulse thudded in her throat and her nipples peaked hard against her bra.
