I’ve never told anyone this—not even the guys after too many beers—because saying it out loud still feels like lighting a match in a room soaked with gasoline. But three years ago my dad married Vanessa, and from the first time she walked into our kitchen in that soft white sundress, bare legs flashing, smiling at me like I was already family, something inside me twisted hard and stayed twisted. I was nineteen then. Now I’m twenty-two, and the ache hasn’t eased; it’s only grown sharper, meaner, more precise. She’s thirty-eight, tall, with that thick dark hair she always pins up loosely so a few strands brush her neck, full mouth, the kind of body that fills out jeans and simple blouses like they were tailored to torment me. Stepmom. The word itself is a lock and a key at the same time.
Dad thought he was being generous when he handed us the tickets. “Bonding experience,” he said, clapping me on the shoulder. “You two never get time alone. Go taste some beer, talk, relax. I’ve got meetings all weekend.” Vanessa just smiled that calm, knowing smile of hers and said it sounded perfect. I almost choked on my coffee. Alone with her for an entire afternoon at a craft brewery forty minutes outside the city. Forced proximity. Shared samples. No one else to buffer the heat I felt every time she crossed a room.
We drove separately and met in the gravel lot. She stepped out of her car in a light denim shirt knotted at the waist, black skinny jeans that hugged every curve, ankle boots. The afternoon sun caught the freckles across her collarbones. “Ready to get educated, Jake?” she asked, voice low and warm. I told her I was ready for whatever they poured, and the look she gave me lingered half a second too long.
The tour started in the bright taproom—copper kettles gleaming, guides talking grain bills and hop varieties—but the real shift happened the moment they handed us the first flight. Four small glasses each. I watched her lift the first one, a hazy IPA, and take a slow sip. Foam kissed her upper lip. She licked it away without thinking, and my cock twitched hard against my zipper.
“You’ve been staring again,” she murmured, almost conversational, as we moved to the next station. No accusation. Just fact.
Heat flooded my face. “Sorry. Habit.”
“Don’t apologize.” She bumped her shoulder lightly against mine. “I noticed years ago. You think I don’t feel it when those green eyes of yours drag over me like you’re undressing me at the dinner table?” Her voice stayed soft so the other tourists wouldn’t hear, but the words landed like a hand wrapping around my throat. “I’ve felt the same pull, Jake. Every damn time you walk out of the shower half-dressed or stretch on the couch. Forbidden. Stupid. But there.”
I nearly dropped my glass. The confession hung between us, electric, while the guide droned on about fermentation temperatures. We sampled a rich stout next. She leaned in so her perfume—something warm and vanilla with a sharp edge—cut through the malt smell. “Tell me I’m wrong,” she whispered. “Tell me you haven’t jerked off thinking about bending me over the kitchen island while your father’s upstairs.”
My pulse hammered. “You’re not wrong.” The words came out rough. “I’ve wanted you since the wedding reception. Watched you dance with him and hated myself for imagining it was me.”
Her eyes darkened. She took another sip, throat working, then set the glass down with deliberate care. “Good. Because pretending has been exhausting.”
The tour led us deeper into the facility, through cooler hallways lined with stacked oak barrels. Dim lighting. The air thick with the sweet-sour scent of aging beer, wood, and yeast. Our group thinned as people lingered at tasting stations. Vanessa walked slightly ahead, hips swaying, and I couldn’t stop watching the way the denim stretched over her ass. She glanced back once, caught me, and smiled—slow, dangerous, full of the same hunger I felt.
In one of the barrel rooms the lights were lower still, strings of small bulbs casting shadows between the towering racks. The guide’s voice faded as he moved the main group forward. Vanessa stopped beside a massive barrel, trailing her fingers along the wood. I stepped close behind her, close enough that my chest almost brushed her back.
