The wind howled like a living thing outside the beach house, rattling the shutters and driving sheets of rain against the glass walls that usually framed endless blue ocean. Tonight those windows showed only black chaos split by jagged white lightning. Inside, the power had died an hour ago, leaving Vanessa and Tyler in the flickering glow of the few candles they’d managed to light before the storm swallowed the world. The air hung thick with salt and ozone and the residual heat of a day that had burned too hot before the sky cracked open.
Vanessa stood barefoot on the cool tile, arms wrapped around herself though the temperature hadn’t truly dropped. Her tight sundress clung to every curve the humidity had painted on her skin—thin white cotton gone nearly translucent where rain had blown in through a cracked sliding door earlier. At forty-two she still carried the body of a woman who swam every morning and refused to soften; high, full breasts strained the bodice, nipples visibly peaked from the chill and something far less innocent. The skirt rode high on her thighs each time she shifted, revealing the smooth undersides and the barest hint of the lacy thong she shouldn’t have packed for a family weekend.
Tyler lounged on the wide sectional as if the house still belonged to lazy afternoons instead of this isolated night. Nineteen, lean from college swimming, dark hair damp and curling at the nape. His board shorts sat low on narrow hips, and every time lightning flared he made no effort to hide the way his eyes dragged over her. He’d been doing it for months—casual brushes of fingers when he passed her a drink, comments about how the sun made her freckles stand out across her chest, the slow smirk whenever she bent to pick up a towel.
“Cold, Vanessa?” His voice cut through the thunder, low and amused. He never called her Mom. Never had. “Come sit. Body heat’s free.”
She hesitated only a second before crossing to him, heart already thudding harder than the storm deserved. The couch dipped under her weight as she settled close—too close—hips nearly touching. His thigh burned against hers through the thin fabric. Another flash lit the room and she saw the unmistakable ridge thickening along his shorts.
“You’ve been staring all weekend,” she said, keeping her tone light even as her pulse hammered. “Even with your father and sister here. Bold little shit.”
Tyler’s grin flashed white in the next burst of light. “Can you blame me? That dress is criminal. I’ve been hard since you walked out this morning. Kept thinking about peeling it off you on the deck while everyone was down at the water.” He shifted, deliberately letting his knee nudge higher between hers. “You like it when I talk like that. Don’t pretend you don’t. I’ve seen the way you look at me when you think I’m not watching.”
Vanessa’s breath caught. The forbidden weight of it pressed in with the storm—her husband’s stepson, the boy who’d grown into this cocky, beautiful man under her roof. She’d married Mark when Tyler was sixteen; three years of watching him fill out, of catching herself staring at the V of his hips when he came in shirtless from a run, of touching herself in the master bathroom after everyone slept while picturing that mouth on her. She’d told herself it was harmless fantasy until the fantasies started starring his voice saying filthy things only for her.
