I never thought I’d be back here, standing in the driveway of my childhood home with a weekend bag slung over my shoulder and my heart already hammering like it remembered every secret this place still held. The wedding was tomorrow—my best friend Claire’s big day—and the whole sprawling Victorian had been turned into a temporary inn for the bridal party. I’d expected to crash on the living-room couch or maybe share a twin bed upstairs with one of the bridesmaids. What I hadn’t expected was Claire’s breezy text that morning: Daniel’s flying in last minute and the only free space is the finished basement suite. You two okay doubling up? King bed, pull-out sofa, private bath. It’ll be fine, right?

Fine. Right.

I was still staring at that message when the front door opened and there he was. Thirty-two now, taller than I remembered, broader in the shoulders, the same dark hair falling a little too long over his forehead, the same quiet intensity in those gray eyes that had wrecked me at twenty. Eight years. One single, scorching kiss behind the garage the summer after my sophomore year of college, and then I had run. Packed my car in the middle of the night and driven straight back to campus without saying goodbye. I told everyone it was about internships and independence. I never told anyone it was because kissing Daniel Hayes had felt like standing at the edge of a cliff I wasn’t brave enough to jump from.

“Emma.” His voice was lower, rougher. He stepped aside so I could come in, and the brush of his arm against mine sent a jolt straight down my spine. “Claire said you’d be sharing the cellar with me. Hope that’s not… weird.”

Weird didn’t begin to cover it.

We made the usual small talk while I followed him down the narrow stairs into the finished basement—rec room turned guest suite, complete with a plush king bed, a pull-out sofa against the far wall, soft lighting, and the faint scent of laundry detergent and old wood. The air felt thicker down here, private, sealed off from the laughter drifting from the kitchen above. I set my bag on the sofa and tried not to look at the bed.

“I’ll take the pull-out,” he said quickly, rubbing the back of his neck the way he always used to when he was nervous. “You take the bed.”

“Don’t be ridiculous. You’re taller. I’ll be fine on the sofa.”

We both knew neither of us would sleep well either way.

The rehearsal dinner dragged on forever. Toasts, laughter, Claire glowing in her white sundress, her fiancé—Daniel’s younger brother—looking at her like she hung the moon. I sat three seats away from Daniel and felt every shift of his body, every time his knee bumped the table leg, every quiet laugh that rumbled out of him. By the time the last champagne flute was emptied and the last guest had hugged goodbye, my skin felt too tight. We walked back down those stairs together in silence, the door clicking shut behind us with a finality that made my pulse stutter.

Fresh filth, nightly
