The Stranger's Voice Became His

The manor breathed dust and forgotten vows. Elias moved through its halls with a scholar’s quiet tread, twenty-eight years of loneliness clinging to him like the cobwebs that veiled the portraits of dead relatives. Candlelight trembled along cracked plaster and moth-eaten tapestries. He had inherited the place from an uncle who spoke to no one and died with ink-stained fingers and a smile no one could explain. In the uppermost chamber, behind a sheet stiff with age, Elias found the mirror.

It was taller than a man, framed in blackened silver wrought with interlocking thorns. When he dragged the sheet away, the glass did not show his hollow cheeks or the tired set of his mouth. Instead it held a figure of terrible beauty: tall, bare-chested, skin the pale gleam of polished marble, curling black horns sweeping back from a high forehead, eyes like banked coals. The creature smiled, slow and knowing.

“Elias,” it said, and the voice slid straight into the marrow of him, velvet and low. “Your uncle promised me another. I have waited.”

Elias’s pulse hammered. He should have covered the glass, fled, burned the wing. Instead he stepped closer until the candle flames painted both their faces in gold and shadow. “Who are you?”

“Vesper. Incubus. Bargainer. I wore your uncle thin with pleasure until he begged to keep me. Now the house is yours… and so am I, if you choose it.”

The voice did not stay behind the glass. It began to unspool inside Elias’s skull, a private filthy murmur that made his cock twitch against his trousers.
