The fog clung to Blackthorn Manor like a shroud, seeping through the warped panes of Eleanor’s bedchamber as the clock struck midnight. She stood barefoot on the cold floorboards, twenty-eight and hollowed by widowhood, staring at the oil portrait of her late husband Charles. His painted eyes had always watched her with that faint, apologetic smile. Tonight the canvas wept. Thick crimson drops welled from the corner of his mouth and slid down the gilt frame, dripping onto the marble hearth with soft, wet ticks.
Eleanor’s breath caught. She stepped closer, nightgown whispering against her thighs, and touched a fingertip to one warm droplet. It smeared scarlet across her skin. The air thickened, shadows coiling. From the darkness beside the tall window stepped a figure who had not been there a heartbeat before.
Lord Vael was tall, devastatingly so, black hair falling in careless waves to the high collar of a coat older than the house itself. His face was carved marble and sin—sharp cheekbones, a mouth made for ruin, and eyes the deep red of aged claret. When he smiled, the tips of fangs glinted.
“Eleanor,” he said, voice like velvet dragged over stone. “Your husband kept his word longer than most. He bargained his soul so that fever would spare you five years ago. The debt has come due. I require your willing body as crimson payment. In return I offer eternal protection… and more, if you desire it.”
