The apartment had gone strangely quiet in the three days since Sophie had ground herself against Vanessa’s thigh until they were both shaking. Neither of them mentioned the soaked panties, the bitten lips, or the way Sophie’s fingers had almost slipped under the lace before they froze and pulled apart like teenagers caught by headlights. They moved around each other in careful orbits—Vanessa brewing coffee at six-forty and leaving a mug out like a peace offering, Sophie returning from sunrise classes with damp hair and a too-bright “morning” that never quite landed.
Vanessa told herself it was residual adrenaline, nothing more. She was a corporate lawyer, twenty-eight, bills paid on time, boundaries clear. Sophie was twenty-six and smelled like coconut oil and sweat and something sweet underneath. That combination had no business living rent-free in Vanessa’s head during partner meetings. Yet every time Sophie stretched past her in the narrow kitchen, tank top riding up to show the soft dip of her waist, Vanessa’s pulse kicked hard enough to make her fingers slip on her phone.
Thursday evening the doorbell rang while Vanessa was still in her charcoal pencil skirt and silk blouse, laptop open on the dining table. Sophie padded barefoot to answer it, still in the black bike shorts and cropped sports bra she wore for evening flow. The woman who stepped inside was taller, sharper, thirty-one and radiating the kind of ease that made expensive jeans look like an afterthought. Camila. Sophie’s ex. Vanessa had heard the name once, tossed off between laughs, and then never again—until now.
“Hey, gorgeous,” Camila said, voice low and warm, and kissed Sophie full on the mouth like it was the most natural thing in the world. Not a peck. A slow press that lingered, one hand sliding to Sophie’s hip and squeezing once. Sophie made a soft sound against Camila’s lips—half surprise, half something hungrier—and Vanessa felt it land between her own legs like a struck match.
They settled at the kitchen island with mugs of coffee Camila had brought from the good place downtown. Vanessa stayed at the table, pretending to scroll discovery documents while every nerve tracked the conversation. Camila’s knee bumped Sophie’s. Camila’s fingers brushed Sophie’s wrist when she reached for sugar. Camila laughed at something Sophie said and let her gaze drop openly to the stretch of bare midriff between sports bra and shorts.
“You still do that thing with your hips in downward dog?” Camila asked, voice pitched just loud enough to carry. “Used to make me forget my own name.”
Sophie flushed, glancing once toward Vanessa before answering. “Maybe. You’ll have to come to class and find out.”
Camila’s smile was pure mischief. “I remember how you taste after a hard practice. Salty. Sweet. I used to lick it off your thighs in the changing room.”
Vanessa’s thighs pressed together hard under the table. Heat flooded her face; she could feel her panties growing damp against the silk lining of her skirt. She hated how jealous it made her—hated more how the jealousy twisted straight into arousal. Sophie’s soft laugh, the way she leaned into Camila’s space, the casual possession in Camila’s hand on the small of Sophie’s back—all of it rewound the memory of Sophie grinding on her own leg three nights ago, wet and desperate and whispering Vanessa’s name like a secret.
When Camila finally stood to leave, she pulled Sophie in for another kiss, deeper this time, tongue clearly involved. Sophie’s fingers curled in Camila’s shirt. Vanessa’s breath snagged. She watched Camila’s palm slide down and cup Sophie’s ass through the tight shorts, squeezing once in plain view, and the sound that almost escaped Vanessa’s throat was closer to a whimper than she would ever admit.
At the door Camila murmured something too low to catch, then louder: “Call me when you get lonely, Soph. Or when your roommate stops pretending she doesn’t want to watch.” A wink aimed straight at Vanessa, then she was gone.
The latch clicked. Silence swelled.
