The university library after midnight was a tomb of dust and silence, the kind of place where even the fluorescent lights seemed to hum in mourning. Eleanor Vance moved through the dimly lit stacks like a ghost herself, her sensible heels clicking softly on the worn linoleum. At forty-two she still wore her grief like a second skin—three years since Robert’s heart had simply stopped in their bed, leaving her with a house too quiet and a body that ached for more than memory. Part-time shelving kept the bills paid and the loneliness at bay, or so she told herself. Tonight the air was thick with the smell of old paper and floor wax. She pushed a cart laden with returns deeper into the labyrinth of metal shelves on the third floor, where the overhead lights were deliberately kept low to preserve the bindings.

She reached for a heavy volume on African diaspora literature when she felt it—eyes on her. Turning, she locked gazes with him.

Marcus Cole stood at the end of the aisle, six-foot-two of solid black muscle poured into a faded university hoodie and jeans that clung to thick thighs. Twenty-eight, a graduate student in history, he had the kind of presence that filled the narrow space between the stacks. His dark eyes flicked from the book in her hand down the length of her body—pencil skirt hugging pale hips, white blouse straining just enough at the buttons, the modest cardigan that did nothing to hide the soft swell of her breasts. Eleanor’s breath caught. She had seen him before, always polite, always late-night, but never like this. Never with that slow, hungry look that made her nipples tighten against the lace of her bra.

“Excuse me,” he said, voice a deep velvet rumble that seemed to vibrate in her bones. “I’m looking for something obscure. Fanon’s Black Skin, White Masks—annotated edition, 1967 printing if you’ve got it. The catalog says it’s back here somewhere.”

Eleanor swallowed, throat suddenly dry. “Third row, second shelf from the bottom. I think I just… shelved it.” She turned, hyper-aware of the way her skirt stretched across her ass as she bent to retrieve the volume. When she straightened and handed it over, their fingers brushed. Heat lanced up her arm.

Marcus didn’t step back. He took the book but kept his gaze on her face, then let it drop deliberately to the way the fabric molded to her curves. “You always work this late, Mrs. Vance?”

“Eleanor,” she corrected softly, surprised at herself. “And yes. Quieter. Easier to think.”

“Or not think,” he murmured. The air between them thickened. She could smell him now—clean soap, faint cologne, something warmer underneath. Her late husband’s ghost flickered at the edge of her mind and then, for the first time in years, receded.
