Beneath Her Perfect Feet
Kassi loses a bet and spends the evening happily smothered under her roommate Malia’s huge bare feet.
The apartment always smelled faintly of shea butter and the citrus cleaner Kassi used on every surface she could reach. She was twenty-two, a college graduate three months into a quiet office job, and she moved through the place as if she were borrowing it. Malia, twenty-five, took up space the way weather did. She was beautiful in a way that made people look twice on the sidewalk: deep brown skin, a wide soft face, full arms, a heavy chest and hips, a belly that shifted when she laughed. She kept her hair in thick twists and her feet bare from the moment she came through the door. Those feet were large, broad, and always warm from the floor, the soles a paler brown than the tops, the toes long and unpainted.
They got along. Both of them were straight, both of them liked the same stupid cooking shows, and neither of them brought men home often enough to make the other uncomfortable. Kassi did the dishes. Malia paid the larger share of rent without making a speech about it. The only thing Kassi could not stand was the feet.
“Could you not,” she said one Thursday, edging past the couch, “put those on the coffee table? I eat there.”
Malia glanced down at her own soles, propped casually on the wood, and wiggled her toes. “They’re clean. I washed them.”
“They’re still feet. Huge feet. On the table. Where plates go.”
“You say that like I dragged them through a parking lot.” Malia’s voice was low and amused, never sharp. “You flinch every time I cross my ankles. It’s a little dramatic, Kassi.”
“I don’t flinch.”
“You do. Like they’re going to leap up and chase you.”
Kassi made a face and retreated to the kitchen. She had tried, more than once, to explain it. It wasn’t dirt, exactly, though she hated the idea of skin oils on the rug. It was the size of them, the casual way Malia let them take over a cushion, a table, the arm of the couch. They were always there. Bare. Soft-looking and heavy. Kassi had said as much out loud, more than once, and Malia had only laughed and called her precious.
On Friday they made a bet the way they made most decisions, half joking, half bored. A weekend marathon of the baking competition they both pretended not to care about. Whoever correctly called more eliminations by Sunday night won. Loser handled the winner’s Sunday chores and didn’t complain.
“And if I win,” Malia said, stretching her legs so one bare foot hovered near Kassi’s knee, “I’m picking something extra. Something small. You can say no if it’s actually awful.”
“Fine,” Kassi said, because she was sure she had the British contestant pegged. “If I win, you wear socks in the living room for a week.”
Malia snorted. “Deal.”
Kassi lost. She lost badly. By Sunday evening Malia was stretched along the couch in a soft gray tank and loose shorts, one arm behind her head, looking pleased with herself in a lazy way that wasn’t unkind.
“Chores I already know,” she said. “The extra is this. You said you hate my feet. I want you to stop pretending they’re a natural disaster. Sit on the floor. Put them in your lap. Look at them. That’s the forfeit. You can tap out whenever.”
Kassi stared at her. “Worship them, you mean. That’s what you’re asking.”
“I’m asking you to hold them and stop making that face. Call it whatever you want.” Malia’s mouth curved. “Playful. Not a dare you can’t refuse. If you hate it after a minute, we drop it and you just do the dishes.”
Kassi thought about the dishes, and about how ridiculous it would be to keep flinching in her own living room, and about the fact that Malia was watching her without pressure, one eyebrow up, ready to laugh it off. “Okay,” she said. “One minute. Then I’m done.”
She slid off the couch and sat on the rug. Malia swung both legs over and settled her feet in Kassi’s lap, soles up, heels heavy against Kassi’s thighs. They were warmer than Kassi expected. The skin of the soles was thick and smooth, faintly lined, smelling of clean soap and the warm, ordinary scent of skin that had been inside no shoes all day. Kassi’s hands hovered.
“You can touch,” Malia said. “That’s the point.”
Kassi set her palms on the arches. The weight surprised her. Each foot was broad enough to cover most of her lap, the toes spreading a little when she pressed. She had braced for disgust. What arrived instead was a strange, quiet drop in her shoulders. The television murmured. Malia’s calves were soft and heavy across her forearms. Nothing in Kassi’s body sparked the way it did when she thought about men. There was no heat between her legs, no tightening, no want of that kind. There was only the solid fact of being under something warm that did not ask her to perform.
“Still hate them?” Malia asked.
“I don’t know,” Kassi said. Her voice came out smaller than she meant. She turned one foot and looked at the sole properly, the ball, the heel, the slight crease where the skin folded. She didn’t kiss it. She only held it, and the minute passed, and she didn’t tap out.
Malia shifted, curious rather than aroused. Kassi could see it in her face: no flush, no change in her breathing, only the comfort of having her feet held after a long day. “You look calm,” Malia said. “That’s new.”
“It’s heavy,” Kassi said. “I thought I’d want to shove them off.”
“And?”
“I don’t.” She swallowed. “Can you—just rest them. On me. Not in my lap. On me.”
Malia studied her for a second, then nodded. “Lie back.”
Kassi stretched out on the rug. Malia turned on the couch and laid both feet across Kassi’s chest and stomach, soles down, the full soft weight of them settling as she relaxed. Kassi’s breath left her in a slow push. The feet covered her from collarbone to ribs, warm through her thin shirt, toes curling once against her shoulder. Malia’s legs were thick. Even without putting her body over Kassi, the pressure was real. Kassi stared at the ceiling and felt small in a way that didn’t scare her. She wasn’t thinking about sex. She was thinking about how quiet her head had gone, how the aversion she had rehearsed for months had nowhere to stand once the weight was actually on her.
“This okay?” Malia asked.
“Yes.”
“You sure? You’re very still.”
“I’m sure. It doesn’t feel like—like that. Like anything dirty. It just feels like you’re on me. I like it.” The admission sat in the room, plain and a little stunned. “I didn’t know I would.”
Malia hummed, not teasing now. “I don’t feel anything like that either. Just comfortable. You’re a better footrest than the table, I’ll give you that.”
They stayed that way through the end of the episode. Kassi didn’t kiss, didn’t lick, didn’t do more than breathe under the steady press of those soles. When Malia finally lifted her feet, the absence was immediate and unwelcome. Kassi sat up with her hair mussed and her shirt wrinkled in two broad prints, and she didn’t make a joke. Malia didn’t either.
On Monday Kassi came home from work and found Malia already on the couch with a takeout container balanced on her stomach, feet bare, the baking show still queued like a private joke. Kassi set her bag down. She didn’t announce anything. She crossed the room, lowered herself to the rug, and looked up.
“You can put them on me,” she said. “If you want. I’m asking.”
Malia’s brows rose. She set the container aside, swung her legs over, and rested both feet on Kassi’s chest again, slower this time, letting Kassi arrange herself underneath. “Still not a sex thing,” Malia said, checking.
“Still not,” Kassi said. “I just want to be under them. Under you, if you’ll let me. It makes everything else shut up.”
“Then get comfortable.”
Kassi did. She turned her face and pressed her cheek to the sole of Malia’s right foot. The skin was soft at the arch and firmer at the heel, warm enough that her face warmed with it. She breathed in. Soap, skin, a trace of the lotion Malia used on her legs. Not unpleasant. Not the catastrophe she had built in her head. She opened her mouth and kissed the center of the sole, a small dry press, then another, slower, along the arch. Malia made a quiet sound that was more surprise than pleasure.
“That tickles a little,” she said. “Not in a sexy way. Just—weird. Keep going if you want. I’ll tell you if I hate it.”
Kassi wanted. She kissed the ball of the foot, the crease under each toe, the broad pad of the big toe. She wasn’t performing for anyone. Her body stayed quiet in the way that mattered: no ache, no wetness, no fantasy of being taken. What she felt was the smother of it, the way Malia’s foot covered most of her face when she turned fully into it, nose against the arch, lips against the sole, the other foot heavy on her chest so she couldn’t sit up without asking. She licked once, experimentally, a flat slow stroke from heel toward toes. The taste was clean skin and a little salt. She did it again because the weight didn’t lift, because Malia only sighed and went back to her food, because being used as a place to rest felt like permission to stop being useful in every other way.
They did it again on Tuesday, longer. Kassi came home, changed into an old T-shirt and cotton shorts, and lay on the couch with her head on the arm so Malia could stretch out and drop both feet across her face and throat. Malia watched half a season of something mindless and ate cold leftovers with a fork, talking now and then about a coworker, about the rent portal, about nothing. Her feet shifted when she laughed. The soles dragged softly over Kassi’s mouth and nose, a gentle smother that never quite cut off her air because Malia was paying attention even when she pretended not to be. Kassi kissed whatever part landed on her lips. She nuzzled the spaces between the toes, slow and thorough, her hands resting on Malia’s ankles, not pulling, only holding so the feet wouldn’t slide away.
“You really like being stuck there,” Malia said during a commercial.
Kassi’s answer was muffled against a sole. She turned her head enough to speak. “I like that I can’t see the room. I like that you’re heavy. I like that you don’t need me to do anything except stay.”
“I don’t need you to stay,” Malia said, honest. “I like that you want to. It’s nice having my feet up on something warm that doesn’t complain. That’s as far as it goes for me.”
“That’s enough.”
Wednesday night Kassi asked if they could move to the bed. Not for anything else. Just so she could lie flat and Malia could put more of herself over her without the couch arm digging into her neck. Malia considered it, then nodded. They changed into sleep clothes in their own rooms—Kassi in a faded shirt and panties, Malia in a long tee that barely covered the tops of her thighs—and met in Malia’s room because the bed was bigger. Kassi lay on her back near the foot. Malia sat against the headboard with a book, then decided she was too tired to read and simply stretched out, swinging her legs around until her feet found Kassi’s face.
The smother was fuller on the bed. Malia let her knees bend and her thick calves settle along Kassi’s chest, the weight of her lower legs pinning Kassi in a long, gentle press. Her feet crossed loosely over Kassi’s mouth and eyes. Kassi could breathe through the side of her nose if she turned. When she didn’t turn, the sole covered her completely, soft and hot, and she held still until Malia shifted to give her air without being asked. They had agreed on that before either of them got under the covers: if Kassi tapped Malia’s ankle twice, the feet came up. Kassi didn’t tap.
She worshipped slowly, the way the forfeit's minute had stretched into hours. She kissed the left sole until her lips felt warm and slightly swollen, then the right. She licked the arches in long strokes, unhurried, tasting lotion and skin, nosing at the tender center until Malia’s toes flexed. She took each toe into her mouth one at a time, not sucking hard, only holding them, wetting them, letting them rest on her tongue while the rest of the foot lay across her eyes. Malia’s breathing stayed even. Once she yawned. Once she reached down and patted Kassi’s hair like she was settling a blanket.
“You’re shaking,” Malia said.
“I’m not scared.”
“I know. You’re just—under it. All the way.”
“Yes.”
Kassi pressed her face up into the soles and stayed there while Malia drifted. They had talked about sleep before the lights went down. Malia had said she was willing to doze with her feet on Kassi if Kassi promised to move if anything felt wrong, and to wake her if she needed the weight gone. Kassi had promised. It wasn’t sex, and it wasn’t a surprise. When Malia’s breathing deepened, her feet grew heavier, slack and hot, the toes loose against Kassi’s cheek. Kassi lay awake under them for a long time, kissing what she could reach without disturbing the sleep, savoring the scent that gathered in the warm dark between sole and mouth, the overwhelming softness of a body that could cover her without trying. She felt owned in a small domestic way and wanted in no sexual way at all, and the difference mattered. She slept eventually with her lips against an arch, and woke to morning light and the same weight, Malia already awake and scrolling her phone, feet still parked on Kassi’s face as if that were where they belonged.
“Morning,” Malia said. “You stayed.”
“I wanted to.”
“Good. I’m not moving yet.”
Thursday and Friday blurred into the same shape. Kassi stopped sitting in chairs when Malia was home. She took her place on the floor or at the end of the bed and waited, and Malia, lazy and fond and entirely unaroused, used her. During dinner Malia ate at the coffee table with both feet stacked on Kassi’s chest, soles presented, and Kassi spent the whole meal kissing and licking in slow devotion while Malia talked about a recipe she wanted to try. During a movie Malia lay on her side and draped one heavy leg over Kassi’s head so the sole covered her from forehead to chin, the other foot resting on her sternum, and Kassi nuzzled until her face was damp and the skin of the sole shone. She loved the way the foot eclipsed the screen, the room, her own thoughts. She loved the give of the flesh when she pressed up, the way Malia’s obese softness made the smother gentle instead of sharp, a goddess’s casual weight rather than a struggle. Malia would sigh, shift her hips, and keep watching, one hand resting on her own belly, content to be adored and equally content that none of it asked her to feel anything she didn’t.
By Saturday the arrangement had a rhythm neither of them had negotiated out loud beyond the first yes. Kassi came home, showered, and crawled to the couch before Malia asked. She lay down. She turned her face up. Malia, fresh from her own shower, skin smelling of cocoa butter, settled into the cushions and laid her huge bare feet over Kassi’s face and chest with the ease of someone putting her legs up after work.
“You’re early,” Malia said.
“I didn’t want to wait.”
“Greedy.” There was no heat in it. Malia wiggled her toes against Kassi’s lips until Kassi opened and kissed them, one and then the next, slow wet presses that made Malia huff a laugh. “Still nothing sexy on my end. Just so we’re clear. You’re a very dedicated footrest and I like my evenings like this. That’s the whole thing.”
“That’s the whole thing for me too,” Kassi said against the sole. She licked a long line up the arch and felt the weight settle harder as Malia relaxed into it. Her world narrowed to warm skin, the faint sweetness of lotion, the pressure across her eyes, the soft smother that let her breathe when Malia allowed and covered her completely when Malia didn’t feel like moving. She didn’t want to be anywhere else. She didn’t want Malia to want her in any other way. The aversion was gone, replaced by a craving that lived in her chest and her quiet mind: to spend the days under those perfect feet, and the nights too, pinned and overshadowed, useful only as a place for Malia to rest.
They stayed like that through the evening. Malia ate. Malia dozed. Malia woke and nudged her soles more firmly over Kassi’s mouth, and Kassi kissed them without being told, grateful and calm, exactly where she had chosen to be.
