Locker Room Farewell: Her Married Stepbrother Claims Her One Last Time
Miriam's married stepbrother claims her one last time in the empty locker room.
The empty women’s locker room still held the damp heat of the afternoon practice, chlorine clinging to the air like a second skin. Miriam stood barefoot on the slick tile, towel wrapped loosely around her body, hair dripping slow trails down her spine as she emptied the last of her gear from the dented metal locker. Twenty-two years old and finished with college swimming forever. The thought should have felt clean. Instead it sat heavy and restless under her ribs.
She heard the door click shut behind her before she saw him.
Terrence.
Thirty-four, married, her stepbrother for the last eight years, and right now filling the narrow space between the rows of lockers like he belonged nowhere else. He had flown in without telling anyone except their parents, surprising her from the bleachers during cool-down laps. She had felt his eyes on her the entire time she climbed out of the pool. Now he was here, still in the dark jeans and open collar shirt he had worn to the natatorium, cologne cutting through the wet-tile smell—something warm and expensive that always made her stomach pull tight.
