The champagne flutes glittered like a thousand tiny stars under the crystal chandeliers of the grand ballroom, their golden liquid catching the light as laughter and music swirled through the air. Elena stood at the edge of it all, her heart hammering beneath the delicate lace of her wedding gown, the heavy satin skirting her hips like a second skin. Twenty-eight years old and newly bound by vows she had spoken only hours ago, she felt the weight of the diamond ring on her finger like a chain. Her husband—smiling, oblivious, toasting with his groomsmen—was lost in the throng of well-wishers. The air inside had grown thick with perfume and heat, pressing against her skin until she could scarcely breathe. She needed space. Needed the night.

She slipped through the French doors onto the moonlit balcony, the cool night air kissing her bare shoulders and sending a shiver down her spine. Below, the gardens stretched in silvered shadows, fountains murmuring softly. Elena gripped the stone balustrade, closing her eyes as the breeze toyed with the fine strands of her upswept hair and the gauzy veil trailing down her back. For a moment she let herself imagine freedom—no expectations, no forever—just the raw pulse of want that had been coiling low in her belly all evening.

Footsteps approached, deliberate and unhurried. She turned, and there he was: tall, broad-shouldered, a figure carved from midnight itself. A Venetian carnival mask covered the upper half of his face, black and intricate with silver filigree, leaving only his full, sensual mouth and strong jaw exposed. The rest of him was impeccable in a tailored tuxedo that clung to the hard lines of his body. Even before he spoke, something in the way he carried himself—the quiet confidence, the faint scent of cedar and spice she had memorized years ago—made her breath catch.

“Running away already, Mrs. Thorne?” His voice was low, rough velvet, wrapping around her name like a caress. Marcus. Her husband’s best man. Her own secret, longtime crush. The man whose dark eyes had followed her across countless dinners and late-night drinks, whose touch during the rehearsal dinner had lingered just a second too long on the small of her back.
