The downtown studio smelled of citrus cleaner and warm lights. Elena adjusted the softbox one last time, bare feet silent on the polished concrete, the silk robe she had worn between setups discarded over a stool. At thirty-two she knew her body well—the long lines of her legs, the soft curve of her belly, the way the shadows loved the underside of her breasts. She was shooting for herself tonight, something private and unflinching, when the heavy street door clicked open and footsteps climbed the stairs.

She grabbed the robe and pulled it loosely closed just as a tall man filled the doorway. Broad shoulders under a dark coat, dark hair silvered a little at the temples, a face that stopped her breath mid-chest. Marcus. Fifteen years fell away in a single heartbeat. Summer camp. The last night by the lake. The boy who had kissed her like the world was ending and then vanished when his family moved.

Their eyes locked. The air between them went thin and bright.

“I—Christ. Wrong address,” he said, voice rougher than she remembered. “I was looking for the critique circle on the third floor. The listing said—”

“Marcus.” Her own voice surprised her. Soft. Certain.

He stepped fully inside, coat still on, keys forgotten in his hand. Recognition crashed through him the same way it had through her. “Elena.” Her name left him like a confession. “You’re… fucking hell, you’re her.”

She let the robe hang open just enough that the studio lights painted her collarbones, the inner swells of her breasts. Heat climbed her throat, but she didn’t close it. “I never forgot you either.”
