The workshop smelled of sawdust, old motor oil, and the faint ghost of cigarette smoke that still clung to the rafters even six months after the funeral. Nadia stood in the doorway with her arms wrapped around herself, watching Otto’s broad back as he wrestled a heavy toolbox down from the high shelf. At thirty-two she still felt raw, the grief sitting in her chest like a warm stone, but the sight of him—rugged, thirty-five, shoulders stretching the faded blue of his firehouse T-shirt—sent a different heat sliding lower.

He had shown up the moment she texted, no questions, just that quiet nod and the same steady presence that had stood beside her at the grave. Both of them knew what her husband had said years ago, half-drunk around a campfire after a long shift: if anything ever happened to him, Otto was to take care of her in every way. Body included. The words had hung between them ever since, unspoken but alive.

“Careful with that one,” Nadia said, voice softer than she meant. “He kept the good chisels in there.”

Otto set the box down and wiped his hands on his jeans. His eyes lingered on her bare legs under the short summer dress she had chosen without quite admitting why. “I remember. He used to bitch that nobody else knew how to keep an edge.” A small, sad smile tugged at his mouth. Then it faded into something hungrier when she stepped closer to help sort the loose photos spilling from a cigar box.

They worked side by side for nearly an hour, knees brushing, the air growing thicker with every shared memory. Nadia’s fingers trembled when she lifted a stack of Polaroids—camping trips, bare-chested laughter, Otto and her husband with arms slung around each other. Beneath them lay a sealed envelope addressed simply to Otto in her husband’s heavy scrawl.
