The private karaoke room smelled faintly of citrus cleaner and the sweet burn of the cocktails we’d ordered, the leather couch cool against the backs of my thighs as I sat too straight, too careful. Cassidy reclined opposite me like she owned the dim red light, one elegant leg crossed over the other, the slit of her black dress revealing the smooth length of her calf. At thirty-eight she looked carved from confidence—dark hair swept up, mouth painted a deep berry, openly bisexual and never shy about it. My best friend’s stepmother. The woman I’d watched for years from the edges of family dinners and pool parties, pulse hammering every time she laughed or brushed past me.
I was twenty-two and shaking. The mic sat heavy in my hand though neither of us had sung yet. “Cassidy… I have to tell you something before I lose my nerve.” My voice came out thinner than I wanted. “I’ve had this crush on you. A real one. Lesbian. Deep and aching and constant since I was eighteen and first realized what those looks I gave you meant. I think about your mouth. Your hands. The way you move. I’ve wanted you so badly it hurts.”
She didn’t laugh or pull away. Cassidy set her glass down with a soft clink, eyes never leaving mine. The air thickened. “I know,” she said, voice low and warm, almost amused. “I’ve noticed every lingering glance, Talia. The way you stare when you think I’m not looking. How your breath catches if I lean close. I’ve been fantasizing about you too—about peeling that nervous little dress off you, about tasting the crush you’ve been hiding. I wanted you to say it out loud. I’ve been waiting.”
Heat flooded my face, my chest, lower. She knew. She had wanted it back. The forbidden edge of it—my best friend’s stepmother, the age gap, the years of stolen looks—only made the confession burn hotter. Both of us fully aware now, both eager, the room suddenly too small and perfect.
Cassidy stood, selected a slow, sensual duet on the screen, something with heavy bass and lyrics about secret touches and midnight confessions. She handed me the second mic. “Sing with me.”
We started soft. My voice wavered at first, then deepened as hers wrapped around mine, husky and intimate. The words felt like they were meant for us alone. Mid-verse she stepped closer until the heat of her body reached me. On the chorus her free hand settled at my waist, thumb stroking once through the thin fabric. My nipples tightened instantly. By the bridge our voices had gone rough with want. She sang the line about “taking what’s already yours” right against my ear, breath hot, and I almost dropped the mic.
The song ended on a long, vibrating note. Cassidy took both mics, set them aside, and pulled me down onto the wide couch with deliberate strength. I landed half in her lap, skirt riding up. “Look at you,” she murmured, cupping my face. “All that aching finally out in the open. Tell me again how long you’ve wanted this.”
