The flight cancellation had left Noelle with two choices: a grim overnight in the airport terminal or the spare key Yvonne had pressed into her hand years ago with a laugh and the words “use it whenever.” Yvonne was off for the weekend at some spa retreat with her book club, the house empty except for her quiet stepson. Noelle stood on the porch of the familiar Craftsman, rain soaking the collar of her blouse, and told herself it would be fine. She was forty-two, freshly divorced, tired down to the bone. Andre was nineteen now. Just a kid she’d watched grow up in the background of birthday parties and summer barbecues. Harmless.

She let herself in. The living room lamp was on. Andre sat on the long sectional in dark sweatpants and a faded T-shirt, laptop balanced on one thigh, dark hair falling into his eyes. He looked up. The boy she remembered—skinny, silent, always ducking out of adult conversations—was gone. In his place was a broad-shouldered young man whose stare hit her like a physical weight. His eyes tracked from her damp hair down the open collar of her blouse to the pencil skirt that clung to her hips after hours of travel. He didn’t smile. He just closed the laptop slowly.

“Flight got canceled,” she said, dropping her bag. Her voice sounded thinner than she wanted. “Your mom said I could crash. Hope that’s okay.”

“It’s fine.” His voice had dropped an octave since the last time she’d heard it. He stood, and suddenly the room felt smaller. He was taller than her now, solid through the chest and arms. “Guest room’s made up. You want a drink? Mom left wine.”
