Brigitte swung her leg over the saddle with all the grace of a tipsy giraffe, which was saying something because the horse beneath her—a patient bay gelding named Biscuit—had the temperament of a saint who’d taken up meditation. She was twenty-eight, an amateur rider whose idea of “private lessons” had mostly involved YouTube videos and one disastrous group class where she’d nearly brained herself on a jump standard. Now she was here, at Willow Bend Stables, a quiet stretch of countryside that smelled of hay, leather, and the faint promise of poor decisions.
Andre stood in the center of the ring, arms crossed, thirty-four and built like someone who actually used his core for more than laughing at bad jokes. Tall, dark-skinned, with a smile that suggested he knew exactly how ridiculous she looked and found it charming anyway. “Heel down, Brigitte. You’re flapping like a pigeon with a sprained wing.”
“I’m trying,” she shot back, cheeks already pink. “My heels have a mind of their own. They’re freelancers.”
“Freelancers who need a contract,” Andre said, stepping closer. He tapped her boot with two fingers, voice low and amused. “Control starts in the saddle. You want the horse to listen, you have to mean it. Right now you look like you’re negotiating a hostage situation with your own stirrups.”
Brigitte snorted, nearly losing her balance. The banter had started light on day one—three lessons ago—and now it crackled. Every correction came wrapped in that dry wit, and every time his hand brushed her calf to adjust her leg position, something warm and stupid fluttered low in her belly. She liked the way he watched her: not creepy, just… assessing. Like he could see the mess of eagerness under the bluster.
“Maybe I need a firmer hand,” she said before her brain could veto it. The words hung there, ridiculous and loaded.
Andre’s eyebrow climbed. “Is that so? Careful, or I’ll start thinking you enjoy being told what to do.”
“Only when the instructor’s hot enough to make posture corrections feel like foreplay,” she muttered, then immediately regretted the volume. Biscuit flicked an ear as if judging her.
Andre laughed, rich and unhurried. “Noted. Let’s see if we can get that seat deeper before you accidentally invent a new discipline called ‘falling with style.’”
The lesson turned sweaty fast. Summer heat clung to the indoor arena; dust motes danced in the shafts of light from the high windows. Brigitte posted the trot until her thighs burned, Andre calling out adjustments in that calm, teasing cadence. “Shoulders back. Soft hands. You’re strangling the reins like they owe you money.” He had her halt, walk, circle. Each time he stepped in to correct her—palm flat between her shoulder blades, fingers light on her knee—the air thickened. She could smell him: clean soap, leather oil, a hint of whatever cologne survived barn life.
When she finally dismounted, legs wobbling, her breeches were damp in more places than sweat could explain. Andre took Biscuit’s reins, leading the horse toward the cross-ties while she peeled off her helmet and shook out damp blonde waves.
“Better,” he said. “Still loose in the hips, though. You ride like you’re waiting for permission to commit.”
