The gravel driveway crunched under Tamara’s boots as she climbed out of her dusty SUV, the late-afternoon heat already sticking her thin cotton shirt to the small of her back. Twenty-eight, city-soft in the way only a veterinarian who’d spent the last six years in fluorescent-lit clinics could be, she still carried that crisp professionalism like armor—clipboard under one arm, medical kit in the other. The stable sprawled quiet and low, cedar and manure and sweet hay thickening the air until it felt almost edible. A prized mare, the call had said. Colic scare, possible early impaction. Nothing she hadn’t handled a hundred times.
She found Ingrid first.
Thirty-two, tall enough that Tamara had to tip her chin up, sun-bronzed from endless hours outdoors, the stable owner stood half in shadow just inside the wide barn doors. Tight tan breeches clung to long, powerful thighs and a high, firm ass; tall black riding boots gleamed with dust and care. A sleeveless shirt left her shoulders bare, freckled and strong, collarbones sharp above the open collar. Ingrid’s hair was pulled back in a messy knot, a few damp strands stuck to her neck. When she turned, her gaze locked onto Tamara’s without hesitation—openly sapphic, dark and assessing, like she already knew exactly how the other woman tasted when she came.
“Dr. Hart?” Ingrid’s voice was low, roughened by sun and smoke. “Ingrid Voss. Thanks for coming out this far.”
She stepped forward and offered her hand. The handshake lingered. Ingrid’s palm was calloused, warm, fingers curling just a fraction longer than polite around Tamara’s smaller ones. Heat crawled straight up Tamara’s arm and settled heavy between her legs. She felt the flush start at her throat.
“Tamara,” she corrected, voice steadier than she felt. “Just Tamara is fine.” She didn’t pull away. Ingrid’s thumb stroked once across her knuckle—deliberate, filthy in its quiet confidence—before finally releasing her.
“Tamara.” Ingrid tasted the name, smiling slow. “Mare’s this way. She’s quiet now, but I’d rather you see her yourself.”
They walked side by side down the aisle. Horses shifted in their stalls, soft snorts and the stamp of hooves. Tamara tried to focus on the job, on the scent of clean straw and leather, but Ingrid’s body heat kept brushing her. Every few steps their shoulders nearly touched. Ingrid smelled like horse and sweat and something darker underneath—soap and woman, musk that made Tamara’s mouth water.
The mare stood in a large corner stall, bay coat gleaming, ears flicking. Tamara set her kit down and stepped in, murmuring soft nonsense while she ran practiced hands along the animal’s neck, flank, belly. Ingrid followed, closing the stall door behind them with a soft click that felt louder than it should.
